It is so important that you think very carefully before deciding if the Mastiff is the right breed for you, your family and your circumstances. We would recommend that you try and meet the breed prior to either rescueing a Mastiff or buying a puppy. There are several dog show's in the country where you can meet Mastiff's or contact us and we can put you in touch with family's willing to let you meet them in their home's. If you would like to purchase a puppy please do not buy out of your local free ads. Reputable breeder's do not need to advertise in these. We recommend you contact the breed club's who are always willing to offer help and advice.
They can go from this:
To this:
Humbug above is only 13 Months Old!
It is true that they are generally a very calm and docile breed. However, they can be extremely large, heavy and strong. They have a much larger appetite than your standard Labrador and can quite literally eat you out of house and home! Some could slobber for England and their saliva can damage many surfaces if left to dry! Some Mastiffs moult and shed there coat for most of the year. Mastiff's can be clumsy and can knock a small child or a frail adult over accidently.
Chutney who weighed 18.5 stone in his prime!
Despite this they are loyal gentle giant's, who generally fit in well with all age group's. Mastiffs are notorious for their love of children. However, for peace of mind small children should always be supervised and you must never let your child tease any dog. Mastiff's as a whole get on well with all other animal's, this does require a sensible introduction however, in the case of a rescue.
We would emphasise the need to take out pet insurance for your mastiff. In particular make sure you have life cover for any illness. Although the Mastiff is not generally prone to illness more than any other breed, the vet's fee's can be crippling. This is due to the larger than normal dosage required during treatment (think small pony!).
Mastiff's can be very obedient if they are trained correctly. They are actually quite an intelligent breed contrary to popular belief. They enjoy learning and we have found that correct clicker training can be very successful in a short time. You must NEVER be heavy handed with your Mastiff as a firm voice is more than enough.
We would advise you to use a check chain when walking your dog. Mastiff's are strong and a basic collar or half-check is not always enough to stop a Mastiff pulling away. In this day and age with the Dangerous Dogs Act as it is you must be a responsible owner. If you think that a large breed gives you a higher status, you are only fooling yourself. The Mastiff should not be used as a status symbol. They are a loving, family dog who thrive on T.L.C and a full food bowl!
